Riserva naturale Foce Sele-Tanagro

Riserva naturale Foce Sele-Tanagro

The Foce Sele-Tanagro Nature Reserve is a protected natural area of Campania, set up in 1993 that includes the provinces of Salerno and Avellino.

The nature reserve includes parts of the coast between Salerno and Paestum, the territories along the banks of Sele and Tanagro Rivers to a width of 150 meters from the shore, with the exception of Contursi Terme and Oliveto Citra, where the width is reduced to 50 meters, and Polla city centre.

The banks of the rivers are rich in poplar hygrophilous woods, willow and alder, as well as reed beds.

Along the coast of the mouth of the Sele is a coastal pine forest formed by the reforestation of the area in the maritime pine and stone pine, the stretch of coast between Paestum and Battipaglia.

The territory geographically identified as "Sele Zone" is characterized by the presence of the Sele River to the north and Solofrone to the south.

The other two sides of the Sele Zone are characterized by 13 km of sandy coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea and the mountains Calpazio, Sottano and Soprano, which dominate the whole plain.

Within the Sele Zone borders are many wildlife sanctuaries: Mount Polveracchio, Picentini Regional Park, Oasis of Persano, Natural Reserve of Monti Eremita and Marzano, and hydrothermal springs of Contursi Terme.

It also houses a large number of animal species related to wet environments. As well as amphibians and reptiles, such as great crested newts and yellow-bellied toads, there are many otters, whose presence is a sign of excellent environmental quality. Among the birds are grey herons, moorhens, mallards, great crested grebes, and little bitterns.
