Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritime), it belongs to the family of Brassicaceae and is a low growing plant. The word Lobularia means “small pod” in Greek and the plant was given this name because of the shape of its fruits and the word maritime refers to the fact that the plant prefers coastal habitats.
The plant has white, pink, violet or lilac petals and has a sweet fragrance.
In Italy the plant is present in the wild in almost all regions. In Salerno Province is most frequent in areas near costal ponds but it can be found anywhere where there is rocky or sandy soils.
