The Cipollotto Nocerino Dop has been recognized as outstanding product with DOP in 2008. Besides being an agricultural high quality product of Sarno Valley, province of Salerno, it is also a part of the historical culture. In fact, the first documented onions of this kind is dated back to over 2000 years.
This type of onion has a significant scientific value. It may represent and conserve a rare genome of a plant species.
In the famous Hippocratica Civitas Medical School of Salerno it is recommended to use this onion for medical reasons. Since the late 800 and early 900 the cultivation of onions has had a significant importance in local production systems.
In the territory of the Sarno Valley the onion is favored by the soil and the climate factors that characterize the entire area. The land for its origin, its transformations, and its present structure is the optimal environment for hosting the "Onion" that grows well in a light, fresh, well-drained soil. The presence of volcanoes in the surrounding areas has led to the formation of the Sarno Valley. The numerous eruptions of Vesuvius have contributed to the spread of ash and minerals over the territory, which have enriched the soil with nutrients and formed a natural and efficient drainage.
The cultivation of 'Cipollotto Nocerino' affects the whole area of the Sarno Valley, which extends the territory of Agro Nocerino in the Province of Salerno and the south western part of the Province of Naples.
The Cipollotto Nocerino Dop has important therapeutic properties, certified by major research institutions, it is in fact anti-ageing, anti tumor, expectorant, diuretic, purifying, toning, rich in Vitamin C and reduces the risk of infarction.
Thanks to the unique climatic conditions of the Agro-Nocerino-Sarnese is the Onion is produced throughout the year and is therefore available for consumption during all four seasons
