Picarel
Average size: 10 cm
Maximum size: 22 cm
It has a not so big head, just like the small mouth endowed with small teeth on the palate. The body is ovoid and it is leaden-bluish with a black rectangular spot with a white border. The colour changes depending on the gender and the degree of sexual maturity. The full grown male has very pronounced blue stripes and spots. The picarel is a coastal species which lives near sandy bottoms, even at 150 meters of depth. It feeds on crustaceans, plankton-copepods and annelids. It is mainly caught with fish-nets and fish-traps.
