The Common hazel (Corylus avellana), is a plant belonging to the family Betulaceae. The genus name is derived from the greek κορις = helmet.
It is found throughout the Mediterranean area in mountain areas reaching up to an altitude of about 1500 meters. In Giffoni Valle Piana, near Salerno, hazel has a long tradition.
It is a shrub that reach around 5 m.The fruit, called hazelnut and it is edible and is rich in oil, it is also used in the production colours and in perfumery.
