Six-gilled shark
Average size: 2-3 m
Maximum size: up to 6 m
The sixgilled shark is a large shark with broad head and a heavy and powerful body. It has six large gill’s apertures, one more compared to most of the other sharks which have five gills.
It’s a shark that typically inhabits depths greater than 80 meters and can even reach 1000 meters. During the night it gets nearer the surface to hunt. In the hotter months it prefers to move near the coast for food and breeding. It is caught with trawling and accidently with fixed nets. In the Amalfi Coast there still are some fisher arms longlines with salted fish to catch the sixgilled shark.
