Tartaruga caretta

Loggerhead sea turtle

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is one of the most represented marine reptile in our waters. Other four species have been seen in the Mediterranean, among them the green turtle is the most common, but they are very rare in the Province’s coasts.

All these species are threatened with extinction because of their vulnerability during the breeding period, when the females needs to lay their numerous eggs under the sand of deserted beach, which are rarer and rarer to find in the Mediterranean coasts. They are voracious predators of plants and marine animals such as jellyfish.
