Lobel's Maple
The Lobel’s Maple (Acer Lobelii) is a rare species of endemic flora and it is protected by the regional law 25/11/94. It can be found in south of Abruzzo (Maiella), in Calabria (Sila) and the Campania region, precisely in the Province of Salerno, in mountain wood with beech trees. The Lobel’s Maple was classified as species by the Neapolitan botanist Michele Tenore during its explorations in the Due Sicilie’s realm.
The name was a dedication to Mathias de Lobel, a Flemish doctor and botanic who lived between XVI and XVII. It can be easily recognized by its magnificent shiny leaves of a intense green, The bark is greenish-grey, smooth in young trees, becoming browner and shallowly furrowed in mature trees.
