The sand lily (Pancratium maritimum) is a species of bulbous lily of Amaryllidaceae family, which grows wild on some unspoiled Italian coasts. In the province of Salerno, it is located in the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, along the coast, especially in the town of Pollica and the town of Castellabate. According to a decree (May 14, 2009) signed by Mayor Costabile Maurano: "It prohibits the collection of these plants, considered rare and vulnerable species and subjected to protection for the scientific interest and the maintenance of biodiversity. Also prohibited are the eradication, corruption, poaching, and the abandonment of waste in their vicinity or in areas that may be flowering ground. Offenders will apply administrative penalties from €25 to €500".
The flower is white and flourish from July to September. The fruit is a capsule containing black seeds of irregular shapes from one or two centimetres. The plant reaches a height of 50-60 cm, with glaucous green leaves. The flowers are large and hermaphrodites, while the petals are contained in a narrow and green floral tube. Pollination is done by insects. The seeds float in water, explaining the great spread of the species.
