The European pear (Pyrus communis) are spread across the Monti Picentini, and the area in which there are more examples of these ancient trees is in Giffoni Sei Casali, in particular in Sieti.

The European pear were delicious fruits and had a special place on the tables of the Greeks and Romans. The pear were used in various ancient recipes.

During the Middle Ages this fruit lost its popularity, then regained it during the eighteenth century. Currently cultivated varieties are more than five thousand, especially in China and Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain).

For protection of the European pear was a Committee for the Protection of Plant biodiversity  formed in December 28, 2006, which together with the Slow Food Picentini and the contribution of the Municipality of Giffoni Sei Casali are valuing this ancient fruit.

The fruit has an oblong shape it is small, and weighs from 30 to 50 grams.

The color is green, which changes to brown in parts exposed to the sun. The fruit is very fragrant already with medium maturation, it has a very sweet taste. The ripening period is late August, early September.
